Top News Audio Briefing – 02 Nov 2026, 10 PM

- Good evening, and welcome to the Times of India’s Top News Audio Briefing.
- It’s a pleasure to have you with us as we bring you the day’s most important headlines from India and around the world.
- We begin tonight with a developing weather situation. Cyclone Murasu, now a Severe Cyclonic Storm, is expected to make landfall near the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur in the early hours of Tuesday. Winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour are anticipated, along with the threat of coastal flooding.
- The India Meteorological Department forecasts landfall south of Ongole between 11:30 PM tonight and 4 AM on Tuesday. Extremely heavy rainfall is warned for several districts in Andhra Pradesh, northern Tamil Nadu, parts of Puducherry, and southern Odisha. Telangana and Rayalaseema are also likely to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Officials have deployed NDRF and SDRF teams and advised a complete suspension of fishing operations.
- Moving on to political news, the Nationalist Congress Party on Monday sought to put speculation about an internal rift to rest. Party leaders dismissed reports of differences following a high-profile meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a delegation of senior NCP leaders in New Delhi.
- The speculation was fueled by the absence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar and her sons from Sunday’s meeting. However, NCP national chief spokesperson Umesh Patil rejected these claims as ‘incorrect, baseless and misleading,’ affirming that the NCP remains united under Sunetra Pawar’s leadership. He added that Sunetra Pawar and Parth Pawar had met Shah earlier to discuss party issues.
- In other news from the capital, the Supreme Court responded sharply to a plea highlighting a steep surge in airfares. Justice Vikram Nath told the counsel, ‘Don’t travel by air. Next case,’ before moving on to the next matter.
- The counsel had claimed airfares increased by as much as 700 percent, arguing it violated Article 14 as air travel is an essential service. Meanwhile, India has adopted new airfare rules, applicable from January 1, 2027, which continue the policy of letting market forces determine prices, with government interference only in ‘extraordinary situations’.
- Turning to a notable legal development in Mumbai, the Bombay High Court continued its interim relief against a ‘Leave India’ notice issued to actor Imran Khan Pal, a US citizen and Overseas Citizen of India. The court remarked that OCI cardholders are not Indian citizens and ‘cannot behave like an Indian citizen’.
- Khan furnished an undertaking and an unconditional apology after being given two weeks to leave India following an FIR for unlawful assembly at a protest. The Chief Justice suggested he apply for Indian citizenship, noting he has lived and worked in India for 42 years. The court also cited ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakam’ and suggested the Centre could be ‘magnanimous’ once an apology was tendered, while also stressing the seriousness of the matter.
- From India, we now turn our attention to the United States, where Americans are preparing to vote in the November 3 midterm elections. State and local officials are bracing for possible disruptions, ranging from federal intervention at polling places to challenges over voter eligibility and ballot handling.
- Concerns follow unprecedented moves by the Trump administration to increase federal control over elections. Voting experts and officials are watching five key areas: possible federal interference, challenges to alleged noncitizen voters, problems with voting procedures, election security, and disputes over results after voting ends. Officials are preparing for worst-case scenarios, including potential legal challenges and intimidation.
- And in the world of technology, Microsoft has priced a 25-billion-dollar bond sale, its first US investment-grade offering since 2017. This comes just three days after the company offered voluntary exit packages to about 60,000 employees.
- The company states the money will go towards general corporate purposes, including capital expenditure, as its AI data center bills continue to climb. The bond sale drew an impressive 115 billion dollars in orders, nearly five times the amount on offer, reflecting investor confidence in Microsoft’s AAA ratings. The company expects 3,000 or fewer employees to take the voluntary buyout.
- Closer
