‘It would destroy Democrats’: Trump warns against impeachment after Republicans’ midterm rout
US President Donald Trump.

US President Donald Trump has warned Democrats against pursuing impeachment proceedings against him when they take control of Congress next year, saying such a move would politically destroy their party. His remarks came a day after Republicans suffered a sweeping setback in the US midterm elections, with Democrats securing control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.Speaking at the White House on Wednesday for the first time since the election results, Trump dismissed concerns that Democrats could initiate impeachment proceedings and said he was not worried about the possibility, AFP reported.“No, no, no, not even a little bit,” Trump said when asked whether he was concerned about Democrats seeking to impeach him.“I think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they did that,” he added, insisting there was “no reason” for impeachment. Trump questioned what grounds Democrats could cite, saying it would amount to impeachment “for having a successful country”.The US president also suggested he was open to working with Democrats in Congress, provided they did not seek to obstruct his administration.“I’ll get along probably with the Democrats unless they want to be destructive, but I have the power of the veto,” he said.

Republicans suffer major setback in midterm elections

Trump’s warning comes as Democrats prepare to take control of both chambers of Congress in January 2027, dealing a major blow to the Republican president and his legislative agenda. The midterm results marked a significant reversal for Republicans, who had entered the elections controlling both the House and Senate. Democratic victories across key races have shifted the balance of power in Washington, giving the opposition party greater oversight of the Trump administration. With control of Congress, Democrats are expected to intensify scrutiny of the administration, launch investigations and use their congressional majority to challenge Trump’s policies.
